Using LeaderAmp: Step-By-Step

Step 1: Download and Install

All of the user’s interaction with the cloud-based LeaderAmp platform will happen right on his or her phone, making it available 24-7.

Leaders will need either an Android mobile device with 5.0+ Lolipop (or newer) or an iPhone 5s (or newer) running at least iOS 10.3.

Each user receives an e-mail from LeaderAmp with a link and activation code to install the app to his or her phone from either the Apple App Store or the Android Marketplace. After installation, users create an account and password.

Step 2: Calibration and Adaptive Assessments


The leader development program begins with LeaderAmp’s cutting-edge rater calibration and testing procedures, which establish a baseline for the user’s leadership qualities. These assessments are created by experts in organizational psychology, measurement, coaching, and artificial intelligence (AI). They measure qualities that research has repeatedly shown to make better leaders. 

First, a brief calibration exercise unique to LeaderAmp removes “noise” from the measurement by evaluating how each user interprets questions and uses rating scales. This calibration and the assessments that follow also use advanced, adaptive testing algorithms --also exclusive to LeaderAmp-- to dramatically reduce the number of questions needed for an accurate measure. All told, these assessments are more accurate and 60 to 90% shorter than other tests on the market. This means users complete a battery of assessments in minutes rather than hours, and they do it right on their phones.

In addition to assessments of their own skills, users nominate others to complete 360-degree assessments in additional leadership areas. These can be co-workers, managers, mentors, business partners, or any other stakeholder that the user thinks is knowledgeable and wants to nominate. Each stakeholder receives an e-mail with an explanation of the process and a link to complete similarly efficient and accurate calibrations and assessments through a webpage.

Step 3: Choose Development Goals

Immediately after completing their self-assessments, users get a report showing scores on each leadership dimension and information about what those scores mean. Maybe they’re a “Grandmaster” when it comes to time management, but only an “Apprentice” when it comes to maintaining optimism in the face of challenges. Whatever the results, users get to choose the skills they want to improve.

Similarly, once stakeholders complete their 360-degree assessments, the user receives another report and gets to choose additional leader development goals like improving their teamwork skills, becoming more proactive, or increasing their ability to persuade others.

Step 4: eCoaching, Practicing, and Journaling

Once the assessments are complete and goals are set, users begin to practice the leader development and reflect purposefully on what they learn.


First, on days of their choosing, users receive eCoaching prompts created by leader development professionals and tailored to each user’s level in the dimensions they have selected to improve. For example, those who are already moderately effectively at scanning the business environment for threats and opportunities will receive more demanding eCoaching suggestions relative to those who are starting off lower on that dimension.

These eCoaching prompts contain recommendations like a completing a specific work activity, thinking about a particular situation or problem, reviewing a book or video, asking someone for insight or advice, or even just watching out for something specific in the days to come. They trigger notifications on users’ phones but can be read and reacted to whenever and wherever users choose.

Second, after users have followed these eCoaching recommendations, they update a journal simply by typing or dictating an entry right into their phones. This is a critical step that helps users formalize their thoughts around development goals and what they’ve been practicing. Plus regular journaling shows commitment to development.

Taken as a whole, this AI-assisted, cloud-based eCoaching and journaling leverages assessment results, users’ development goals, and LeaderAmp’s expertise in leader development to give users something concrete with which to regularly practice their leadership skills. This makes leadership development affordable and helps individuals develop even in the absence of interactions with live coaches.

Step 5: Asynchronous and Live Coaching

Users’ journaling and other activity are also being reviewed by a human coach through his or her own web portal. This coach can use back-and-forth chat messages and other notes to provide mobile coaching that appears right in the LeaderAmp app for their
assigned clients.

This is a great way for coaches to offer nudges to complete journal entries, practice more deliberately, and offer praise, encouragement, and advice in response to what they see their clients’ doing in the app. And since users almost always have their phones with them, they can review and respond to messages from their coach whenever and wherever works for them, without needing to schedule a call or meeting.

That said, many coaches do opt to regularly schedule live coaching sessions that happen outside of the app. Such meetings can take place on the phone, in person, or through video conferencing. These are great opportunities for coaches to further help their clients reach their goals by discussing information already gleaned from the app: users’ assessment results, development goals, practice activities, and journaling. And since this information has already been reviewed during the asynchronous coaching process, coaches can avoid spending time reviewing and catching up at the top of live coaching sessions.

Step 6: Is it the End of the Program?

The eCoaching, practicing, journaling, and human coaching cycle repeats for the duration of the program, which can be as long as the client organization specifies. During the program, participants are free to practice as often as they like and coaches can interact with these participants through the app or in live sessions as often as they like. Each week is a new set of opportunities to coach and develop.

7: Reassess and Measure Improvement


At the end of the program, participants are re-assessed within the LeaderAmp mobile app on the skills that they have been practicing. Stakeholders are also invited to re-assess participants on the 360-degree assessments. This gives users a chance to chart their improvement and observe payoffs from all their hard work.

After generating this report, users may be given the option to continue developing the same leadership dimensions or to choose new developmental goals. Coaches can also weigh in on this decision.
